Miami Beach

Miami Beach is a south Florida island city, connected by bridges to mainland Miami. Wide beaches stretch from North Shore Open Space Park, past palm-lined Lummus Park to South Pointe Park. The southern end, South Beach, is known for its international cachet with models and celebrities, and its early-20th-century architecture in the Art Deco Historic district with pastel-colored buildings, especially on Ocean Drive.

You can start your trip in Miami Beach, get up early to see the lifeguard stands before the crowds, explore South Point Park and the Marina, go for a run on the boardwalk, enjoy a nice day with a few cocktails by the beach, go on an art deco hotels hunt, do some people watching on Ocean Drive (be ready for a SHOOOW!) and party all night on Miami beach's famous clubs -or, you know, if like us, you have a baby... escape early from the drunk crowd and try to get some sleep.

A somewhat hidden gem that is the antithesis of its American namesake. Small, shady and intimate, it's well removed from the often frenetic south-coast pace. The beach is divided into two sections by a rock breakwater. The west side is one of the premier swimming spots on the island, with deep, calm and crystal-clear waters, while the east side has a wide recreation area featuring picnic tables under shady evergreen pines and almond trees.

The busiest, and notoriously party-oriented, stretch of the beach lies between 5th Street and 20th Street. If that's not your idea of a perfect day in the sun, head north of 25th Street for a more peaceful beach experience. Not only is the beach picture-perfect, it's free, which is one of my favorite ways to save money while traveling. It's a little known fact that Boca Raton was once home to the Yamato Colony, an attempt by Japanese farmers at the time to revolutionise farming in South Florida beginning in 1903. Whilst their attempts failed, the colony is remembered not only in the naming of Yamato Road but in the stunning Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens. One of the more off the beaten track things to do in Boca Raton, spending a morning or afternoon at this tranquil spot will yield information about the ill-fated colony, as well as showcase some beautiful Japanese art, and even some relaxing and pristine gardens.

Japanese immigrant and pineapple farmer Sukeji 'George' Morikami, a member of the original Yamato settlement of Delray, donated his spectacularly landscaped 200-acre property for the establishment of a museum showcasing Japanese culture. Today you can wander more than a mile of pine-lined nature trails around koi-filled ponds, experiencing different Japanese gardens from bonsai to a 12th-century shinden (pleasure) garden modeled on a noble estate. To complement the gardens, the outstanding museum showcases more than 5000 Japanese antiques, objects and works of fine art.

The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is a museum built in the memory of the Yamato Colony, In 1920, this area was known to be owned by some Japanese farmers, they lived here for quite a while but many relocated with time. However, those who remained lost their farmlands as it was seized by the government for the creation of a military installation. The museum was created due to the need to share the Japanese culture to those who visited it, visiting this museum, you will be welcomed by their numerous permanent collection and their rotating exhibition.

The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens is an absolute cultural gem in South Florida. Half park, half museum, it seems strange to find traditional Japanese gardens in the heart of north Boca Raton, only adding to the intrigue. In 1904, Japanese-born Jo Sakai founded a small agrarian community called "Yamato" (hence the name, Yamato Rd.) with a few dozen Japanese immigrants.
